Sr Mechanical Engineer (Fluidics Emphasis)

Applied LifeSciences & Systems is a Start-Up bio-systems company focused on improving animal health and productivity in the poultry, livestock and aquaculture industries. The ALS-S system merges advanced imaging systems, computer learning, fluidics and automation to provide high-throughput system solutions to aforementioned industries.

The Sr.  Mechanical Design Engineer with Fluidics Emphasis holds a key position in the design and advancement of New Product Development (NPD) initiatives for bio-devices for the global poultry industry.  This vacancy is to be filled with a highly creative, seasoned, hands-on engineer, who will lead/participate in NPD programs for new applied bio-mechanical technology and devices from conceptualization to development and commercialization, including, idea generation, research, evaluation, product design, feasibility analysis, value assessment, product introduction, field application and commercialization.  This position currently reports to the Director, Engineering Development and leads development initiatives internally through a matrix organization in addition to managing external consulting and design firms, to accelerate NPD initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide in depth and hands on technical expertise to aggressively progress the company’s portfolio
  • Participate and contribute in experimentation and evaluation of experimental results
  • Design, optimize and integrate fluidic systems with advanced automation
  • Source and validate materials and parts from external vendors for product development
  • Write experimental plans, protocols and related procedures for product development & transfer
  • Prepare production samples and evaluate product design and integrity
  • Working closely with biologists and engineers, he or she will be responsible for the implementation and further development of the technology with the ultimate goal of delivering biologicals to animals
  • Be able to conduct multidisciplinary communication within a R&D team

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Masters in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related discipline
  • At least 10 years’ industrial experience in medical or diagnostic device/equipment design & development
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing and utilizing fluidic systems for bio-devices or diagnostics systems
  • Experience with pump design for bio-devices is highly desired
  • Experience with spray nozzle design and development is highly desired
  • Industrial experience in the product development of fluidic based bio-processes (Plus)
  • Design, develop, execute, and trouble-shoot fluidic systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency in design of experiments & statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of material science, immunology, microbiology and related field (Plus)
  • Demonstrated design and implementation experience utilizing a wide range of mechanical fabrication techniques and process, including Metal/Plastic Molding, Welding, Laser Cutting, Material Forming, 3D Printing, Machining and Casting for variety of materials
  • Hands-On knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Solid Edge preferred), and engineering analysis software (i.e. COMSOL )
  • Experience in tolerance analysis of assemblies and detailed parts
  • Experience with Engineering Change Management processes desired
  • Ability to concurrently handle multiple project assignments
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills required
