Mr. Appleton grew up in the family hatchery, egg business in NE Alabama, and graduated from Auburn University with a BS in Agricultural Economics and Poultry Science. He retired as the President of Merial Select, Inc. (wholly owned subsidiary of Merial, Ltd.) and continues to support the global poultry and swine industries as the Owner and President of ChixChat, LLC, a poultry sales, marketing, recruitment and consulting company.
Over the past decades, Stan has held many executive leadership roles in the global animal health businesses. In 1980, he helped start up Select Laboratories, Inc. as the Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Services. Later in 1996, he served as the President of Select Laboratories, Inc. and continued as the President of Merial Select, Inc. after the acquisition of Select Laboratories by Merial. In addition, from 1998 through 2008, Stan simultaneously served as the Executive Director of Merial Avian Global and Vice President of Merial Avian North America. His extensive career in the food & agriculture businesses involves a number M&A’s and business integrations.
Taylor Barbosa graduated from the Federal University of Santa Maria Veterinary School, in Brazil. Later, he completed his MS and PhD Infections Diseases programs at The University of Georgia and he also received a diploma from the American Colleague of Poultry Veterinarians. Dr. Barbosa has been working in the Animal Health industry for more than 15 years and in 2015 he joined MSD. Today, Taylor is the Executive Director and Head for Poultry Global Marketing, leading the marketing and technical support to all MSD Poultry products globally. Taylor is a happy father of a girl and a boy and he loves soccer and most of the other sports.
Our Founder and CEO is the architect of over 140 innovative and commercially successfully launched bio-systems and industrial automation products. He has held various executive positions and led business operations, R&D, engineering, and sales teams for Dolan Jenner Industries, Applied Science & Technology, PerkinElmer, Kodak Molecular Imaging, MIDAS Vision Systems, Spire Corporation, Pfizer, and Zoetis. Among his achievements are the establishment of 46 fully integrated turn-key automated factories across the globe in China, India, EU, Latin America and the United States. Mr. Karimpour has successfully spearheaded three international joint ventures and seven global M&As.
A master at developing winning teams, Ramin has also established three global Centers of Excellence in R&D and manufacturing and numerous global sales and field service organizations during his tenure at PerkinElmer, Kodak and Spire.
Mr. Karimpour received his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Boston University and post graduate certifications from Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Massachusetts in Plasma Processing and Executive Management.
Ms. Lynch is our IP Counsel, as well as a member of our BOD and our Corporate Secretary. Kathleen received her degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. After working in the defense industry for a few years, Kathleen pursued a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law School in NH. Kathleen has worked in law firms, as well as corporate and university environments.
Her work as in-house counsel for an Irish pharmaceutical firm, Elan Corporation, took her to Dublin, Ireland for eight years. There she managed the corporate medical device patent portfolios, and trademark portfolios, and worked with colleagues to build and protect all corporate intellectual property assets. In addition, Kathleen worked in the area of licensing, joint ventures and acquisitions. Kathleen is one of the more experienced patent attorneys in the Research Triangle who has practiced intellectual property law for over 25 years. She worked with a select group of small and mid-size businesses and entrepreneurs to assess, protect and defend their intellectual property assets. She is a board member of the Wake Women Attorneys Association and serves on the planning committee for the NC Bar Business Law Section Annual Meeting. Kathleen also serves on the steering committee of the North Carolina Lawyer Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (NCLEAP). She was on the planning committee that implemented the Inventor Assistance Program for low income North Carolinian businesses and inventors.
Dr. Readnour is an experienced senior leader with a proven track record of moving products from discovery through full commercialization. Dr. Readnour received his doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from University of Illinois in 1990 and subsequently joined Eli Lilly and Company as a senior analytical chemist in Elanco Animal Health product development. As a research scientist from 1990 to 2001, Dr. Readnour made significant contributions toward discovery, development and worldwide commercialization of a significant number of successful Elanco products. He is an internationally recognized expert on animal health product development, analytical chemistry, human food safety and drug residues. From 2001 to 2018, Dr. Readnour has served in several management roles within Elanco Animal Health. Dr. Readnour has led several new product development initiatives in new areas of companion animal pharmaceuticals, vaccines, enzymes, and diagnostics. Dr. Readnour currently is a Managing Director at Mountain Group Partners where he investigates investment opportunities in Health Care and Ag. Tech.
Mr. Roberts is a highly experienced professional with 44 years in the poultry and food industry. From ConAgra, Foster Farms, Wayne Farms, and as President of Perdue Farms, he has experience in all facets of integrated poultry companies from the East coast to the West coast.
His professional career includes corporate human resources, profit and loss accountability of all business segments, sales and marketing, negotiation of long-term labor contracts, development of new brand identity systems, and highly effective strategic plans.
As President of Perdue, Roberts was responsible for profit/loss of $4.2 billion totally integrated poultry business. He was responsible for the acquisition of Coleman Natural Foods, leading to Perdue’s role as the largest natural antibiotic-free and organic poultry company as well as providing Perdue’s entry into the natural pork business. He provided leadership for over 20,000 associates, 15 plants in the US, a plant in China, trading offices in Hong Kong, China, Brazil, and Japan; as well as trading partners in Russia, Republic of Georgia, and Brazil.
He served as Chairman and an officer of the National Chicken Council and as a director of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association. Roberts’ education includes a degree in Psychology and Sociology from University of Tennessee, Harvard Business School Agribusiness Series, CSC Index Executive Leadership Series, and University of California Executive Development Program.
John Roush has served as a member of our Board of Directors since April 2017. Mr. Roush also serves as a board director and member of the Compensation Committee and Nominating & Corporate Governance Committee for Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: AEIS) and as a board of director member at LeMaitre Vascular, Inc. (NASDAQ: LMAT). Mr. Roush served as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Novanta Inc., a global supplier of precision photonic components and subsystems to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the medical, industrial, scientific and microelectronics markets, from 2010 to 2016. Prior to joining Novanta Inc., he was a corporate officer and served in several senior leadership positions for twelve years with PerkinElmer, Inc., a provider of technology and services to the diagnostics, research, environmental, safety and security, industrial and laboratory services markets. Since 2009, Mr. Roush had been serving as president of PerkinElmer’s Environmental Health business. From 2004 to 2009, Mr. Roush led PerkinElmer’s Optoelectronics business unit, which supplies specialty photonics products to biomedical and industrial OEMs. From 1999 to 2004, Mr. Roush served in various general management roles within the Optoelectronics business unit. Prior to joining PerkinElmer, Mr. Roush held management positions with Outboard Marine Corporation, AlliedSignal, Inc., now Honeywell International, McKinsey & Company Inc. and General Electric. Mr. Roush received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. The Board has concluded that Mr. Roush should serve on our Board due to his experience at an executive level and his more than 15 years of experience supplying products into the medical device and life sciences industries.
Mr. Adams serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S, developing systems for vaccine delivery and animal handling. Jon has developed and led teams to design complex electro-mechanical systems for the testing and measurement of components across multiple industries. His experience includes high-precision measurement systems for heavy industrial products, fully automated multi-process testing, and analysis of injection molded electrical connectors. He has experience in architecting and developing the data analysis software, UI, and electrical systems to drive these test systems. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Mr. Askew serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S, developing vaccine handling and delivery systems. Mike is an experienced product development engineer, technical leader, and project manager with experience leading cross-functional technical product development teams. Prior to joining ALS-S, he developed many new products for Fortune 500 companies in the commercial water management, medical device, military, industrial controls, and telecommunications sector. Mike’s areas of expertise focus on the architecting and design of complex electro-mechanical systems comprised of dc motors driven mechanisms, molded plastics, sheet metal, machined components, and embedded micro-controller electronics. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Dr. Ryan Boehm
Dr. Boehm serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S, developing vaccine handling and delivery systems. Ryan is an experienced researcher with a demonstrated history of working in government, academic, and industry settings. Prior to joining ALS-S, Ryan was a postdoctoral fellow at the FDA, researching interference mechanisms with glucose oxidase sensors, as well as fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials related to cardiovascular, orthopedic, and dental implants. Ryan’s background includes microscale material processing for drug delivery and biosensing applications; including the use of rapid prototyping/additive manufacturing, biomaterial characterization, device testing, and electrochemical techniques. During his undergraduate and graduate school career, Ryan worked at two small companies in RTP, including a biopharmaceutical company, and another focused on environmental monitoring. Ryan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from North Carolina State University, with a concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. He received his PhD from the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.
Mr. Colclough serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S where he focuses on fluid handling and delivery systems. Gerard has over twenty years of experience in capital equipment design, precision mechanism design, and design for automated systems working for industry leaders including Olympus, Instron, and Zurn. His diverse background ranges from designing customized electro-mechanical solutions in the materials testing industry to developing high-volume scientific analytical instruments. Acting as lead mechanical engineer, and mechanical system architect, he specializes in creating realistic white-page concepts and carrying them through to production launch, with notable recent projects including a battery-operated hand-held X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and dissolved-metals fluid analyzer. Gerard holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University.
Dr. David Cox
Dr. Cox is a computer scientist with 30 years of experience in the industry. He began his career working as a lab technician in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Rochester, with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Penn State. He went on to study computer science first at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned his Mater’s degree and then at the North Carolina State University where he earned his Doctorate. For the past 19 years Dr. Cox has worked in the US Corporate Research Center at ABB Corporation in industrial automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Previously he worked for Xerox Corporation and Eastman Kodak Company and gained experience developing scientific and embedded software for Kodak’s Clinical Diagnostics Division. Dr. Cox has several patents for his work at ABB as well several publications related to software development.
Mr. Fofaria directs our legal team and works with our partners to advance the Corporation’s best interests in HR and Communications. After a stint as an award-winning journalist for The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun and The Boston Globe, Rupen pursued his law degree and graduated with Honors. After working as a litigator with a stellar record in court defending clients in commercial litigation, Rupen joined Loeb & Loeb to manage the IP portfolios of seven Fortune 500 companies. Rupen has spearheaded the funding of over three dozen startups, worked with entrepreneurs on how to marry ideas with business, tax and legal savvy, and was named a Rising Star among lawyers by Super Lawyers Magazine.
Mr. Fryar serves as Senior Project Manager at ALS-S. He has over 26 years of experience in poultry health and automation. While working at Ceva Animal Health and Zoetis (legacy Pfizer & Embrex) he held positions in Field Service, Global Operations, Manufacturing, Product Management, Supply Chain Operations, Sales & Marketing & Vaccination Services. Jason led the global Vaccination Services and Equipment (VSE) team to restructure requirements, salvage and expand sales opportunities, and train colleagues and support sales growth. He has built high-performance teams to overcome challenges and work together to develop and support new ideas, concepts, and products. Jason holds an MBA focused on Technology Management from North Carolina State University and a BS in Biology with a minor in business.
Mr. Goff serves as Research Scientist at ALS-S, where he aids in the development of new vaccine delivery technology, and data analysis optimization. Josh holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida. While pursuing his degree, Josh involved himself in a wide variety of projects that allowed him to work across multiple departments and acquire a plethora of different skills. These projects ranged from biofilm disruption, nanoparticle synthesis, aptamer development, cancer research, as well as carbon capture and utilization. After graduating from the University of Florida, Josh continued working towards improving carbon capture and utilization and assisted in the development of a novel technique for utilizing algae to re-purpose greenhouse gases in such a way that greatly decreases the reliance on fossil fuels for coal burning power plants.
Josh’s highly diverse research experience and skill set make him a highly adaptable research scientist capable of taking on a wide range of different projects.
Mr. Grenon serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S where he is part of the vaccine delivery team. Josh graduated from NC State University in Raleigh, NC with a BS in Biomedical Engineering and a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He comes to ALS-S with 9 years of experience in medical device product development and has worked in both fast-paced startup and large company environments. Josh excels in creating project definitions for manufacturing medical devices and bringing them forward into actionable engineering efforts. Most recently, Josh served as Staff R&D Mechanical Engineer for Johnson and Johnson Surgical Vision where he led the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of a Class 2 medical device. During Josh’s career he has held roles as Lead Mechanical Designer, Technical Team Leader, and Project Manager.
Mr. Hutchins serves as Senior Principal Research Scientist at ALS-S, focusing on delivery methods for post hatch vaccination of chickens with live coccidiosis vaccines. In his prior position at Zoetis and its legacy companies, Pfizer Animal Health and Embrex, he developed and patented novel bioprocessing methods for the manufacture of a live oocyst-based coccidiosis vaccine for in ovo delivery to chicken embryos. Additionally, he led multiple teams of scientists in research generating novel biodevices that targeted automated in ovo delivery or in ovo classification. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has extensive experience in analytical chemistry, specializing in chromatography and spectroscopy, and began his career developing mycotoxin analyses at North Carolina State University in the Poultry Science Department. Jim advanced to further positions in the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and in the Immunodiagnostics Department at the Becton Dickinson Research Center before beginning his 27-year career in poultry biotechnology research at Zoetis.
Mr. Ide serves as Electro-mechanical Technician at ALS-S, where he assists in the development of control systems to run the various vaccine delivery apparatuses. Denny began working in manufacturing with Schneider Electric (known then as Square D) in Knightdale, NC while still in high school. He then went on to attend Wake Technical College and received a diploma in machine shop practices and would later return to receive an additional certificate from their electronics program.
Mr. Ide brings with him 40 years of manufacturing and prototyping experience, making him a highly valuable resource for all of ALS-S’s future endeavors.
Ms. Ramona Jaberian has a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering and over five years of experience with production and processing of materials and fabrics. As a chemical engineer, Ramona led development of six fabrics from concept through proto-type, manufacturing and market introduction. The latter comprised collection of data gatherings and analysis of the success of market introduction. Ms. Jaberian did post-production marketing analysis and consumer base research for market gap analysis, prospects for new product opportunities, and instances for continuous improvement of established lines. For ongoing fabric production, she led cost reduction efforts across multiple product lines and was fully responsible for creating and maintaining a collection of eight seasonal fabrics and troubleshooting manufacturing problems as they arose. As the direct result of her efforts, a new waterproofing compound was developed, which is still in use by the manufacturer.
Ms. Jaberian also has strong background in supervising laboratory personal for quality control. Her supervisory experience required her to confirm and ascertain that applicable regulatory standards were met. Ramona’s extended skills include CAD, MATLAB, Solid Edge, electro-mechanical assembly, and Raman Spectroscopy.
Mr. Mekschun serves as Controls engineer at ALS-S where he brings his expertise to ensure ALS-S machinery will operate in a safe, reliable manner with a positive interactive experience. Matt has been working in Automation and Control Systems for over 16 years. With degrees in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, he has often split time between the electrical design and programming of industrial machinery. In addition, he has a broad base of knowledge working in diverse domains of the industry including refrigeration, pumps, conveyance, packaging, semiconductor, and robotic work cells. Within these industries he has utilized technologies such as PLC/PACs, HMI, industrial networks, variable speed drives, servo systems, machine safety, I/O systems, and machine vision to realize positive outcomes using automation.
Mr. Riggsbee is a machine vision and image analysis specialist with 15+ years of experience with startups and Fortune 500 companies. He began his career fresh out of NCSU working in the plant phenotyping labs of Paradigm Genetics and quickly began to look for ways that he could grow as a professional in a startup environment. In addition to working in the lab, he combined his science education background and interest in photography with a familiarity with computers and began adding value to the high throughput gene discovery pipeline by creating image analysis applications that enabled researchers to gather higher quality data with less variation from images taken of the plants. After Monsanto acquired the company in 2005 he began working full time as an Imaging Systems Developer, building imaging systems and creating image analysis software for researchers at the RTP site and across other parts of the company. These efforts contributed to the development and construction of the Monsanto Automated Greenhouse at the RTP research site. He began to lead the Imaging team at the RTP site in 2012 where he helped increase the phenotyping capabilities of the Automated Greenhouse, improved the code testing methodologies used by the team and delivered on various system upgrade projects.
Mr. Ruiz serves as Senior Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S. Gustavo is an Electro-Mechanical Engineer Professional, focused on goals with a drive for measurable results with over 15 years of driven experience in leading engineering teams in the design, manufacturing and development areas. His broad-based background includes product and process design of electro-mechanical components and assemblies. Gustavo has an established record of producing high quality products, resulting in increased corporate profits for industry leaders. He’s a dynamic team-builder and leader, capable of leading teams in a deadline-driven, cost-constrained environment, while optimizing productivity and quality to achieve organizational goals.
Dr. Sepideh Saeedi
Dr. Saeedi serves as our Executive Communications and Intellectual Property Manager. She facilitates our in-house management of intellectual property (IP) portfolios under the direction of our legal counsel, as well as our internal corporate communications. Sepideh received her PhD in Anthropology from The State University of New York at Binghamton, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Data Curation from the School of Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has experience working in both academic and corporate environments and has been active with several NGO’s, focusing on strengthening their public relations.
Dr. Saeedi uses her experience with data and communication management to keep ALS-S organized and moving ever forward.
Dr. John Andrew Smith
Dr. Smith is a veterinarian with Master degrees in Avian Medicine and Medical Microbiology. A respected poultry industry expert, John is called upon by the poultry industry’s most influential organizations to provide guidance and insight on trends and operations. He has served as President of the Association of Veterinarians in Broiler Production; as Chair of the National Chicken Council, Poultry Health Committee; as Chair and Vice Chair on the United States Animal Health Association, Committee on Transmissible Diseases of Poultry and Other Avian Species; as well as the American Association of Avian Pathologists, US Poultry and Egg Association. John’s has over 35 years’ corporate experience working as Director of Health and Hatchery Services at Fieldale Farms Corp., and several academic positions at the University of Georgia, Colorado State University and Auburn University. Dr. Smith received his DVM, MS in Medical Microbiology and Master of Avian Medicine from the University of Georgia.
Mr. Smith currently serves as Research Scientist at ALS-S, where he aides in experimental research and provides insight on vaccine application to day old chicks. While pursuing his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Animal Science at North Carolina State University, Andrew amassed five years of research experience working with various animal species, including poultry, swine, and dairy cattle.
While pursuing his Master’s degree, Andrew worked as a manager for Matatu, a leading innovator in microbial research, where he oversaw swine growth performance trials. His career has allowed him to become well versed in experimental design and data analytics making him a valuable member of the ALS-S team.
Mr. Strahl serves as Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S, where he assists with the development of tools for vaccine delivery and chick handling. Joe holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron. During his time at Akron, Joe spent a year as a mechanical engineering co-op at Moen, Inc, where he gained experience in new product development and product design. Joe worked as a technical sales engineer for the Lincoln Electric Company after graduating from Akron, where he gained knowledge in welding, automation, and manufacturing. After a few years of working in technical sales, Joe decided to refocus his career from sales to engineering, joining ALS-S in September of 2019. Joe’s diverse range of experience and background help him to adapt quickly to a variety of projects and tasks.
Ms. Sweet is a seasoned Supply Chain leader with over 25 years of management experience including leading multi-million dollar ERP system implementations, and overseeing all aspects of material management. She is a goal-oriented project manager with solid expertise in building and leading cross functional teams through dramatic change and improvement. She embraces a “continuous improvement” approach. Connie brings many years of experience from her past positions as Director, Material Services, Implementation Manager – ERP Systems and Senior Business Process Analyst, Supply Chain at Embrex, Pfizer Animal Health and Zoetis. She has an in-depth knowledge of all areas associated with the Supply Chain, Inventory Management, Logistics, Procurement and Customer Service. Connie is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM).
Mr. Trebilcock serves as Mechanical Engineer at ALS-S where he assists in the development of tools for chick handling and vaccine spray delivery. Evan holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Engineering Management from Wilkes University. Since graduation Evan has worked as a Custom Mechanical Engineer for the Raymond Corporation, a global leader in material handling. While there he worked across multiple engineering disciplines and acquired a plethora of different skills while designing and testing custom electromechanical forklift designs for hundreds of different companies. Afterwards Evan went on to serve as a Mechanical Engineer for Record-USA, an automated entry solution company. While there, he served as a mechanical designer for expansions of current products and processes including automatic door assemblies for safety, custom configuration, and safety.
Evan’s diverse machine design experience and skill set makes him a highly adaptable mechanical engineer capable of taking on a wide range of different projects.
Dr. Liz Turpin
Dr. Turpin is a respected scientist with a strong background in team building and delivering results. With more than 18 years of experience in infectious diseases, virology, diagnostics, assay development and toxicology, Liz has held positions at the USDA, University of Wisconsin, Pfizer and Zoetis. Dr. Turpin has developed and tested over 20 vaccines and devices for use the animal health industry. These products include vaccines for in ovo and day of hatch delivery. Dr. Turpin has also led international teams focused on evaluating vaccine take in the field, offering training and process improvements to address disease outbreaks.
Mr. Wagner began automating industrial machinery over 30 years ago. His career as a Controls Engineer started in a cotton mill where he utilized his military training and high school electronics education in support and repair of manufacturing machines and plant utilities. While at the cotton mill, Scott taught himself electrical controls and how to write code for programmable controllers (PLCs). He also became a licensed electrical contractor. From then until now, Scott’s background in plant maintenance and exposure to many manufacturing processes such as steel, polyester, plywood, and brick have provided a solid foundation for his practical designs in control of industrial machinery.
Mr. Wright-Eakes currently serves as the Vice President of Finance for ALS-S, where he provides financial, analytical, and strategic support to senior management and oversees the company’s accounting, reporting, and budgeting processes.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mr. Wright-Eakes went on to work in corporate and investment banking, serving as a financial adviser to Fortune 500 companies, including Citigroup. Where he analyzed, structured, and executed billions of dollars of equity and debt transactions.
Mr. Wright-Eakes continued his career as an investment analyst for Aurelius Capital Management, a distressed debt hedge fund, where he invested in the debt securities of large, complex, distressed issuers. This would later lead Mr. Wright-Eakes to make use of his background to provide the analytical horsepower to help startups make informed strategic decisions.
Ziye serves as Computer Vision Engineer at ALS-S. She has over five years of experience in implementing computer algorithms for imaging processing. Prior to joining the team at ALS-S, she worked as Research Scientist at Duke University for four years, where she developed imaging segmentation algorithm, trained deep learning neural network for cell classification and implemented eye tracking for automatic optical coherence tomography. Her multidisciplinary background makes her an effective member of the ALS-S team, allowing her to wear multiple hats and aid in the development of multiple facets of projects. She holds a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University.
